It's hard to hate fighting games. For Yahtzee, it's also hard to like them. (From The Escapist)

Bring back those song picks! At least we got a little "jungle boogie" this time.

First post! (yes, Im 15 again!)

Sorry, but I can't quite make out how that is relevant to this weeks episode of Zero Punctuation.

I usually agree with Yahtzee, but I whole heartedly disagree this time. Fighting games are the consoles bread and butter going way back to SF2. I bought the playstation for Tekken and Battle Arena Toshinden. PS2 for Tekken 2. And while my PS3 purchase had more to do with it's media streaming, racing and MGS4, I still love mashing buttons against faceless online opponents on Tekken. Perhaps if he had been driven to the mall by his grandma with a roll of quarters for Virtua Fighter when he was a lad like I had he'd understand it a bit more. I guarantee he couldn't beat me with the throw button, and everyone know that the AI isn't the point of fighting games, but playing against your friends IS.

This was way better than previous weeks, both in terms of animation and humor.

"HAT", "LOVE OF PIES", "FROLICS" character customization bars.
"Small child putting a cat in a tumble-dryer" analogy.
"Minimap Quest" (to be honest, I'd probably buy it).

I mean how in the world does he come up with all this deliciously awesome satire?

You're falling into the trap of taking any of what he says personally.

HE doesn't much like these games, but YOU can like them if you want. If you feel you need to defend them so much perhaps you are uncertain of your love of them. If you love them, and are happy with loving them, then let it lie... there's sure as hell enough people who agree with you.

I used to quite like a round or two of Mortal Kombat, but noawadays I find that I have better things to do than commit to memory insane lists of button combos just so I can do the moves required.

Heheh ya, sorry, up a little past my bed time. Anyway, his animations are still tip top. The part when he grabs the dolls and rams them into eachother was really epic. *squish squish squish*

Ha ha - the reference to last week's top 5, yay.

The ad in the last minute is identical to the one that ran last week.

I played this at my brothers! I spent some time creating a character - the customization is pretty nice, even if the body types are completely ridiculous (I won't even mention Ivy.) But then when I went to button mash a few rounds, the first thing that happened after taking a hit from some ridiculous weapon was having my characters carefully-cultivated outfit explode off of her.

At least she still had her hat!

The customization seems to be pretty neat, especially based on this video:

But, I've never played it so my opinion is somewhat useless..

While it might succeed as comedy it definitely fails as a "review." It's like writing a book review and just harping on how repetitive the page turning motion was or how there weren't any moving images or sounds.

I mean, almost every game in the genre relies on people beating each other to death in a best 2 out of 3 format. What kind of plot does he think will make sense of that? An infinite supply of clones forced to battle each other as sadistic alien overlords watch on in glee? Some suspension of disbelief is inherently necessary. (For the record, I don't even like fighting games - except KI for SNES.)

I realize late August is not exactly a gold mine when it comes to new games, but this was awful. He could have summed up this review in one sentence: "I don't get fighting games." This would have been much more enlightening than Yahtzee's treatise on how the fighting genre isn't the same as other genres of game he's played.

In fact, I would have much more respect for this review if it were limited to the above sentence. That way, instead of being a pointless diatribe, it would have been an oblique Tenacious D reference. Next review! Next review! NEXT

Has Yahtzee's speech slowed down a bit?
